Axles
Alloy Axles
–
Custom Axles Each Strange forged alloy steel axle is manufactured to your exact specifications. Strange axles are CNC precision machined from premium forged alloy steel then induction hardened to resist bending loads and to provide greater flexibility. This is especially important when axles are intended for use in street applications. Strange axles endure an induction hardening process. This involves pulling the axle through powerful electrical coils that heat and quench the shaft, sequentially. This creates an extremely ductile axle because the case is hardened substantially while the core of the axle remains relatively soft. This type of induction hardening is used to treat all Strange premium alloy steel axles designed to survive the bending loads associated with street usage. Strange axles are available for Dana 60, Ford 8.8-inch and Ford 9-inch, GM 10 and 12-bolt, ’57 to ’64 Oldsmobile, and Mopar 8.75-inch rear end configurations. Strange axles are recommended for use in positive traction, limited slip, and Detroit Locker style rear ends. Strange axles are CNC machined to custom lengths and available with 28, 30, 31, 33, or 35-splines. Strange axle shafts with 31 splines, or less, are recommended for street applications, while axles with 33 or 35-splines…
Pro Race Axles
–
Drag Racing Axles Earning their bones in the fast-paced world of NHRA Top Fuel and Funny Car Classes, Strange Engineering has become the standard by which high-performance, drag racing rear ends and rear end parts are measured. Amateur and professional racers alike know that they can trust Strange Pro Race Axles to be the most durable in the industry while remaining the best value on the market today. How do we do it? Strange Pro Race Axles are made from a steel alloy that was originally intended for use in military aircraft landing gear. Hy-Tuf is in a class of ultra-strength alloys configured with a low concentration of carbon and high degrees of manganese, nickel, and molybdenum steel. Strange Pro Race Axles are through-hardened to a tensile strength of 240,000 psi allowing them to retain the necessary degree of ductility required for elite level drag racing. Strange Pro Race 40-Spline gun-drilled axles are ten-percent lighter and 54-percent stronger than 35-spline solid axles. Gun-drilling is a process of removing the core of the axle shaft and leaving a .875-inch hole. Five 1-inch diameter holes are drilled in the axle flange to further reduce rolling mass. Strange 40-Spline gun-drilled axles are rated…
C-Clip Eliminator
–
C-Clip Eliminator Kits From the early days, in an old shop on Howard Street in Chicago, Strange Engineering has led the industry with an innovative focus. It was in that shop, during the early 1970s, that Bernard Green (Green Bearing) brought a special – safer – type of axle bearing to our attention. This special bearing, now called an 8.8 C Clip Eliminator or a 12-Bolt C Clip Eliminator, was not only safer; it was also much more durable. With a 1.140-inch inside diameter and low friction design, the C-Clip Eliminator could accommodate a thicker axle shoulder and broader bearing contact surface area than OEM bearings. The 3.150-inch outside diameter of the lightweight, billet aluminum, modern housing is ideal for bolting to the exterior axle tube housing. They are configured using low-friction ball bearings. This type of bearing delivers a dramatic reduction in rotational loss but is not suitable for non-race use. Street, Street/Strip, and Circle Track C-Clip Eliminator Kits utilize tapered axle bearings making them better suited for applications which require extended use. Such NHRA Pro Stock pioneers as Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins and Joe Satmay were among the first to realize the advantages of the 8.8-inch C-Clip Eliminator and…
Wheel Studs
–
Strange Wheel Stud Kits Whatever your racing pleasure, the more power your vehicle makes, the greater the number of regulations with which you will be faced. If you have been to the drag strip, you know that wheel studs are one of the most scrutinized areas when it comes to vehicle safety and racer regulation. It is for this reason that Strange Engineering offers numerous choices in high-performance wheel studs and wheel stud kits. Racers from every competitive field trust the Strange Engineering name. For more than fifty-years, Strange has provided speed enthusiasts with complete rear ends and rear end parts; including specialty and high-performance wheel studs and wheel stud kits. Strange Wheel Stud Kits are available in multiple designs, various lengths, and several diameters. Wheel studs, nuts, and washers may be configured of chrome moly steel, conventional steel, and aluminum. Wheel stud kits are sold in sets of ten with installation hardware included. Strange Engineering employs a stringent manufacturing process, combined with the finest materials available, to deliver wheel stud kits that are able to withstand the increased shock loads which accompany extreme degrees of horsepower and torque. Strange Wheel Studs tolerate shear and elongation far better than factory…
Axle Bearings
–
Axle Bearings Timken, Federal Mogul, and American Standard are among the top-tier axle bearing manufacturers. Strange OEM style axle bearings (with seals) are designed for use in street/strip and stock vehicles where Legendary Strange custom axles are replacing OEM axles. New axle bearings and seals are recommended whenever axles are replaced. Consult your Strange Engineering representative or the application guide to determine whether lock rings and/or other hardware will be required. Sealed ball bearings and sealed double row ball bearings are typically sold as a sealed bearing. This means that the bearing is not lubricated using rear end lube and doesn’t require a conventional seal in the axle housing. The outer diameter of this type axle bearing is secured to the housing in such a way as to perform a seal. The inner race of the bearing is press-fit to seal the axle shaft and the sealed axle bearing is packed with grease; making it self-lubricating. A separate axle bearing retainer plate usually holds this bearing and axle combination in the axle housing and eliminates the need for c-clip axle retention. Sealed axle bearings are also sold with integrated retainer plates for certain applications. Tapered axle bearings are better for…
Axle Retainer plates
–
Axle Retainer plates Strange Axle Retainer plates are designed to provide a stellar level of security where it pertains to keeping axle bearings in place. Manufactured from heavy-duty steel, Strange Axle Retainer plates are thicker than stock to meet the requirements necessitated by increased horsepower and torque. Strange Axle Retainer plates are cadmium coated to resist rust and corrosion; promoting a lifetime of durable service. New Retainer Plates Ensures Proper Bearing Retention, and compliment any new custom axle order. They are engineered to fit specific applications to assist you with your repair, rebuild, restoration or upgrade.
Driveline
–
Driveline Components There is an old adage that says a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. The same could be said about the automobile driveline. After all, a rear end with the best gears in the world – and weak main caps – wouldn’t be on the road long or make many passes down the dragstrip. One of the most critical, and most overlooked parts of the driveline is often the driveshaft. Like the engine, transmission, and rear end, the driveshaft is only as strong as its weakest part. Strange drag racing driveshafts are custom made using the finest tubing, weld ends, transmission yokes, and universal joints in the industry. Strange Engineering driveshaft builders are second-to-none and, using state-of-the-art equipment, carefully construct and balance each Strange Driveshaft to within eight-thousandths of an inch of runout. Tubing As the largest of the Strange Driveline Components, the chrome-moly tubing must be straight, hard, and durable. Strange Driveshaft tubing (available in 3-inch and 3.5-inch outside diameter) has a wall thickness of .083-inch. It is seamless to ensure minimal vibration and the heat-treated chrome moly construction delivers rugged durability. Welded (MIG and TIG) yoke ends are accurately phased and…
Strange Driveshafts
–
Strange Driveshafts The suspension, steering, and brakes are all in place. You have made your engine selection. You’ve built it with loving care. Only the best of the best – with strict attention to detail. So, what about the driveshaft? Just put the old one in and hope for the best? Not likely. If it fits at all it will be a miracle and, if it does, the chances of it functioning properly and without vibration are somewhere between slim and none. That could leave you with more questions than answers – unless you know about Strange driveshafts. Strange offers custom-made driveshafts for your application. Once you have your transmission and rear (or front) end in place, a few simple measurements and a conversation with an experienced Strange representative can have you on the way to a perfectly balanced (within .008 runout) custom driveshaft for your cruiser, circle tracker, or dragster. It’s not even that expensive. Custom Driveshafts are available in 3-inch and 3.5-inch (outside diameter) thicknesses. Driveshaft length and peak RPM must be considered when determining desired driveshaft thickness. Strange Driveshaft tubing is made from seamless, chrome moly tubing. All Strange Driveshafts are heat treated to ensure…

Transmission Yokes
–
Transmission Yokes When is comes to putting high-value horsepower to the pavement, nothing is more important – or frequently overlooked – than the driveshaft. Chances are, if you have built a competitive street or strip vehicle, it has undergone an engine, transmission, or rear end modification. These driveline modifications will almost always demand that the driveshaft be customized for optimum performance. Nobody builds a better drag racing driveshaft than the folks known for their rear end prowess – Strange Engineering. Strange Driveshafts are brilliantly designed to accommodate two universal joint sizes that are significantly larger (stronger and more durable) than stock. Since the u-joint welded ends (on the driveshaft) are larger, the Transmission Yokes and pinion yokes will also need to be upgraded (assuming they haven’t been upgraded previously). Obviously, a larger, new Yoke will leave you with a stronger driveline but there are still choices to be made. Consider these: Strange HD Nodular Iron Made from a patented blend of nodular iron with much greater tensile strength than conventional cast iron, the Strange HD Trans Yoke accepts 1310, 1350, and 1480 sized universal joints. This is the perfect Transmission Yoke for high-performance street cars, cruisers and the like.…
Pinion Yokes
–
Pinion Yokes Since you are going with a top-quality drag racing driveshaft, now is an excellent time to upgrade your pinion yoke to the larger 1350 or 1480-Series size. Made with pride in the U.S.A. All are forged from the highest quality components and manufactured to stringent tolerances. Strange Yokes are the strongest and most durable yokes in the industry. Strange S-Series Yoke The Strange S-Series Pinion Yoke is fully heat treated for maximum tensile strength. Made from top-tier nodular iron castings, this yoke is economical and strong. If you are building a street/strip car or a cruiser, certainly consider the Strange S-Series Yoke. Strange Chrome Moly Yoke Made from heat treated 4140 chrome moly steel, this Strange Pinion Yoke has extra surface area for increased strength. Strange Chrome Moly Yokes are manufactured to accommodate the Strange Magnetic Pick-Up Collar. This yoke has extra chrome moly in critical areas, and it is finished with a black oxide. Strange Billet Yoke Made from billet chrome moly 4340 steel, the Strange Billet Pinion Yoke is fitted to the huge 1480-Series u-joint. This is an ultra-strong yoke with a black oxide finish.

Magnetic Speed Sensor Collar
–
Magnetic Sensor Collars Think you have to sacrifice advanced computer technology in your racing vehicle? Have you given up on gathering useful transmission output speed data? Vehicle speed data? Perhaps you are using a process of trial and error to map transmission shift strategy because you lack a source of reliable transmission output RPM data for your aftermarket ECU? If you answered yes to any of these questions, and you are using a Strange Pinion Yoke, a Strange Magnetic Sensor Collar may help to rectify the situation. When used in conjunction with an electromagnetic sensor (and a Strange Sensor Support Bracket), the Strange Magnetic Sensor Collar (attached to the Strange pinion yoke) can yield invaluable transmission output RPM and vehicle speed data to your aftermarket or factory ECU. Take the guess work out of planning transmission shift strategy with a Strange Magnetic Sensor Collar. Monitor clutch slippage in manually shifted transmissions by comparing transmission input and output RPM. You’ll know that your clutch disc is worn before the first symptom is exhibited. Track vehicle speed for your ECU and speedometer. Strange Magnetic Sensor Collars are manufactured to stringent specifications to fit only Strange Pinion Yokes. Available with as few as…

U Bolts and U Joints
–
U-Joints & U-Bolts Let’s talk about universal joints. Not the most exciting subject, unless they are lying in pieces – needle bearings and grease strewn all across the track. Suddenly, those boring little universal joints, u-bolts and u-joint straps become the focal point of the universe. They are a direct reflection on your abilities as a racer, and everybody has a suggestion (mostly how they would’ve done it differently). Want to avoid the stress and embarrassment of failed universal joints and u-joint retention hardware? GO BIG! Go with Strange Engineering Universal joints and U-Bolts. Strange Universal Joints are non-crossdrilled (also called pre-lubricated or maintenance free) for superior strength. Sealed and lubricated for the life of the u-joint, multi-lip seals keep the premium synthetic grease in, and everything else out. The non-crossdrilled design features a solid, cold-forged body with heat treated and case-hardened steel caps. End caps are precision forged for exact fit and optimum durability. To further reduce friction, thrust washers, in the bottom of each end cap, eliminate metal-on-metal contact. This also helps to keep temperatures lower. Standard thickness (copper colored) snap-rings are included; along with other sizes (multi-colored) which allow u-joint end play to be adjusted. Inside locking…
Differentials & Spools
–
Differentials & Spools Strange Differentials and Spools run the gambit from weekend cruiser to all-out dragster. As a general rule, differentials are used in street cars (those that drive around corners) and spools are used in race-only applications that only go fast in a straight line. Strange Engineering offers differentials and spools from Strange (of course!), Eaton, Auburn, Spicer, U.S. Gear, Hoosier and Yukon. Differentials Open Differentials are the most basic type of differential. An open differential is designed to free-up the tire with the least traction. This is accomplished with a set of spider gears which allow the free wheel to spin faster so it can catch the wheel with the most traction. No good for high-performance. Strange Clutch Type Differentials use a system of clutches (sometimes on one side, sometimes on both sides) to distribute pulling force between the two axles. Spider gears are also used in this design. Great for stock and performance street applications. A tapered housing with cone-shaped gears gives the Cone Type Differential its name. It works in much the same fashion as the clutch type differential but uses spring pressure instead of clutches. Lockers and Helical Gear Units accomplish the same fundamental purpose…

Dana 60 Spool
–
Dana 60 Spool A spool is one solid part that replaces all components of a differential. The Dana 60 spool fits the Dana 60 rear end. A drag racing spool will always turn both axles at the same speed with an equal amount of force. Due to the simplistic design, it is much stronger and lighter than any differential. It also allows the use of larger axles that can handle greater amounts of torque. This makes it the best choice for Drag Racing, Drifting, and other forms of motorsports that require uninterrupted transfer of power to both wheels. Spools should never be considered for a street application. They are produced in forged steel, forged aluminum, and billet aluminum. If you have any questions please contact Strange to discuss a Dana 60 spool your particular application.
